Emei Campus Overview

Southwest Jiaotong University (SWJTU), founded in 1896, is one of the earliest founders of engineering college in modern China, and is the birthplace of Chinese modern civil engineering, and mining engineering education. The university had been run in Hebei, Hunan, Guizhou, Chongqing, etc. In 1964, the university was moved from Tangshan, Hebei province to Emei, Sichuan province. In 1989, the main part of the university moved to Chengdu, Sichuan Province, setting up a branch school of SWJTU in Emei. Now a school-running pattern of “one university, in two places, with three campuses” is coming into being, that is to say the Southwest Jiaotong University now includes Chengdu campus, Xipu campus and Emei campus.

Emei Campus is located in Mount Emei – Leshan Scenic Area which earns the reputation as "world cultural and natural heritage". The campus, known as “Garden School”, is an ideal place to study, work and live. The campus covers an area of 170 acres, with all kinds of teaching facilities and construction area of 280,000 square meters in total. Emei campus now has the total enrollment of more than 7,000 full time students, nearly 500 teachers and 200 staff members.

According to the needs of social development, combining with the traditions and strengths of the school, Emei campus is committed to the cultivation of high-quality rail transit applied talents, the high-end training, as well as the base construction of Chinese-foreign cooperation in running schools, which mainly undertakes three aspects of school-running tasks: first is to face national rail transit industry, thus cultivating high quality talents with rail traffic characteristics. Second is to create a high level laboratory and practice base with rail transportation characteristics, meeting the needs of the practice teaching of internal and external campus and industry field. Third is to direct the industry to carry out the cultivation of talents and worker training via developing high-end training, university-enterprise cooperation, etc..

Major Layout and Cultivation

Emei campus has 10 departments which are Department of Civil Engineering, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Department of Electrical Engineering, Department of Computer and Communication, Department of Traffic and Transportation, Department of Humanities and Social Sciences, Department of Foreign Languages, Department of Accounting, Department of Basic Course and Department of PE. Emei campus offers 11 undergraduate majors covering 26 professional directions which are civil engineering, mechanical design and manufacturing automation, electrical engineering and automation, electronic information engineering, communications engineering, computer science and technology, measurement and control technology and equipment, transportation, English, accounting etc.

Emei Campus cultivated and created a large number of talents. Students are excellent in jobs and social performance, well received by the market, and establish a good social reputation for the university. Emei Campus has become an important base for high-quality applied talents training of the national rail transport.

Laboratory and Practice Base

Emei campus has built 18 experimental centers, namely: Experiment Center of Civil Engineering Foundation, Civil Engineering Experimental Center, Mechanical Experimental Center, Engineering Training Center, Experiment Center of Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Experiment Center, Transport Experiment Center, Computer Hardware and Software Experiments Center, Communications and Signal Experimental Center, Physics experiment Center, Mechanics Experiment Center, Chemical Experiment Center, Accounting Experiment Center, Self-access Center, Human Motor Skills Experimental Center, the Computer Teaching Practice Center, Railway Practice Base, Urban Rail Traffic Control and Communications Platform.

It also includes four national (province) experimental teaching demonstration sub-centers, covering machinery foundation, electrical engineering, civil engineering, transportation, etc.

The main laboratory and practice bases include: Engineering Measurement Laboratory, Engineering Geology Laboratory, Building Materials Laboratory, underground engineering laboratory, laboratory of mechanical design, mechanical principles Laboratory, Electrical and Electronic Technology Laboratory, Electrical Engineering Laboratory, laboratory of electric locomotives, railway signaling laboratory, urban rail traffic control and communications platform laboratory experimental system of high-speed railway traction power supply, rail transport management and control experimental center, physics laboratory, chemical laboratory, mechanics laboratory and other laboratories and practice bases.

Moreover, relying on the geographical superiority of Mount Emei, Emei campus has built engineering survey and geomorphologic practice bases, etc. Through the joint effort with National Railways Bureau, China Railway Materials Corp, Emei campus has also established some off campus practice bases covering all majors in Emei campus.

Education Internationalization

International education is conducted in depth with the United Kingdom, the United States, Japan, Germany, France, Canada, Australia, Belgium, Thailand and many other country (territory) outside universities and research and education institutions to carry out cooperation in running schools or friendly exchanges, such as George Mason University in the United States, Ostfalia Applied Sciences University in Germany, and the International Union of Railways (UIC).
